June 26, 2025Strengthening national coordination around carbon credit valuation in Gabon
Madame Scyrielle P. Sende Etali, Managing Director of the Agence Gabonaise pour le Développement de l’Économie Verte (AGADEV), took part on Tuesday June 3 in Libreville in an important working session chaired by the Minister for the Environment, Climate and Human-Wildlife Conflict, Mr Mays MOUISSI.
The main aim of this meeting was to strengthen coordination between the various public institutions involved in carbon credit valuation, in order to improve the collective effectiveness of actions carried out in this strategic field.
A number of key entities in the national environmental ecosystem were also invited to take part, including the Conseil National Climat (CNC), the Agence Nationale des Parcs Nationaux (ANPN), the Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations (CDC), the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique et Technologique (CENAREST), and the Fonds Gabonais d’Investissements Stratégiques (FGIS).
At the end of the discussions, a two-tier coordination mechanism was proposed:
– An executive committee, made up of the heads of the institutions concerned, responsible for strategic direction.
– A technical committee, made up of focal points designated within each entity, for operational monitoring and the regular circulation of information.
These structures will be tasked with clarifying the roles and responsibilities of each player, ensuring consistent information sharing, and effectively monitoring ongoing initiatives.
As a reminder, it was with this efficiency in mind that the country’s highest authorities created AGADEV, which also has a mandate to monetize carbon and biodiversity credits.
To this end, the agency is responsible for:
– Designing and/or proposing any mechanism for marketing carbon and biodiversity credits
– Negotiating and concluding the sale prices of carbon and biodiversity credits, in accordance with the rules and practices in force
– Ensuring the execution of related contracts.
“It’s only by working in a unified and structured way that we can transform our preservation efforts into real economic resources at the service of the country. Gabon’s natural capital has value. It’s up to us, together, to make it a lever for sustainable prosperity”, declared AGADEV’s Managing Director at the end of the meeting.
