World Environment Day
June 5, 2025Lieutenant-Colonel NGABINA ODOUMA Audry Hart-mann, Special Advisor to the President of the Republic, Deputy Military Chief of Staff, and Madame Scyrielle Philomene SENDE ETALI, Managing Director of the Agence Gabonaise pour le Développement de l’Économie Verte (Gabonese Agency for the Development of the Green Economy), chaired a workshop in Libreville on Monday, May 19, 2025, bringing together operators from the maritime sector to discuss mechanisms for improving the implementation of the carbon contribution in Gabon.
At the end of this frank and constructive discussion session, solutions were proposed and adopted by mutual agreement to streamline procedures for declaring and paying the Carbon Contribution, and thus strengthen the bonds of trust and synergy between stakeholders.
The Carbon Contribution, the fruit of an initiative by the Gabonese government based on the “polluter pays” principle, offers air and sea operators operating in or transiting through Gabon a solid regulatory framework and a transparent mechanism for offsetting the greenhouse gas emissions of their movements to and from Gabon. It is an important lever in the national strategy to combat climate change and transition to a green economy.
This meeting will therefore have cleared up any remaining operational concerns linked to the implementation of this initiative, which has been widely welcomed by maritime operators.
